How to Use a Luggage Strap (2021) – Guide

by Daniel Smith | Last Updated: January 11, 2021

How to Use a Luggage StrapAnyone who once got into an unpleasant situation, when his luggage was opened on the luggage belt at the airport, will certainly recommend that everyone use the special straps as additional insurance against such situations.

At flight altitude, there is strong pressure, which can cause the zipper on your suitcase to break, and all your belongings will be outside.

That’s unpleasant situation, because some of the belongings may be lost and the airport staff will have nothing to do with it.

To avoid this, I recommend using luggage straps that securely fix the position of the suitcase and prevent things from falling out even if the zippers are broken. However, it’s not the only function of the luggage straps!

Why are luggage straps so useful?

As I said, the luggage strap keeps your belongings safe your luggage is accidentally opened. Moreover, there are belts with additional locks, which makes opening difficult for thieves.

Another important feature of these straps is that your suitcase will be easy to find. You are probably well aware that most suitcases look similar. And on the conveyor belt at the airport, you can easily confuse your suitcase with someone else’s luggage. Thanks to the luggage strap, you can avoid this situation.

In addition, if your suitcase is lost, airport officials will ask you about the distinguishing features of your one. And if it’s secured with a luggage strap, it may be much easier to find.

You can also use the luggage strap as a retainer for an extra bag, and place another bag on top of the suitcase by securing it to the handle. This luggage strap will save you space and allow you to check in two luggage as one. It is very comfortable!

Plus, you can use it to carry your luggage easily by simply tying several bags together.

As you can see, luggage straps have many advantages!

How to choose a luggage strap?

To choose the correct belt, you should understand what you need it for and what types exist. Let’s take a look at each type separately.

Regular belt

Regular belts are the most common travel companions. They are easy to use, inexpensive and well secure the suitcase from opening. However, they will not save your suitcase from being hacked by thieves.

X-shaped belt

Such belts provide a double level of reliability. In addition, they are usually equipped with special locks, which greatly complicate the task of burglars. A belt like this will definitely make a good addition to your travel.

Belt connector

These straps allow you to connect multiple bags to the main suitcase and register the bag as one and not overpay for an additional bag.

How to use the suitcase strap?

It’s pretty easy, but there are a few things to consider:

  1. Be sure to insert the strap under the handle, not over it or to the side. This will keep your belt secure from slipping and the handle will keep it from falling off the suitcase.
  2. Tighten the belt as much as possible. This is especially true for suitcases with a solid frame because they have a slippery surface. To prevent the belt from slipping, it must be tightened as much as possible on the body of the bag.
  3. Use a special lock if the strap has it. Such locks are very difficult to open, even under pressure.

So, is it really necessary to use a luggage strap?

My personal opinion is that it’s better to be insured than to hope for the best. We never know how the fate of our luggage will turn out, and whether it will fall into the hands of unscrupulous airport employees or lightning will break during the flight. Therefore, it’s better to buy additional protection in the form of such a belt and be prepared for all the difficulties.
